How to Balance Pool Chemistry: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Balance Pool Chemistry

Balanced water does three things: protects your pool surface and equipment, makes chlorine effective, and keeps swimmers comfortable. The secret is adjusting chemicals in the right order.

The correct order of operations

  1. Total alkalinity first (80–120 ppm)
  2. pH next (7.2–7.8)
  3. Calcium hardness (200–400 ppm)
  4. Chlorine last (1–3 ppm free chlorine)

Fixing alkalinity first stabilizes your pH, so you are not chasing a moving target.

Step-by-step

1. Test your water

Use a reliable test kit or test strips. For accuracy, take a sample to a pool professional once a month.

2. Adjust alkalinity

If alkalinity is low, add sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). If high, add muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate in small doses, then wait and retest.

3. Set pH

With alkalinity in range, pH becomes stable. Raise it with soda ash; lower it with muriatic acid. Always add acid to water, never water to acid.

4. Check calcium hardness

Low hardness corrodes equipment and etches plaster; high hardness clouds water and scales surfaces. Dilute high-calcium water partially with fresh water.

5. Sanitize

Once balance is set, maintain 1–3 ppm of free chlorine with a tablet feeder or salt chlorinator. Shock weekly during swim season.

Test and adjust weekly

Balanced water is not a one-time task β€” test weekly during the season and after heavy use, rain, or top-ups. A few minutes of testing prevents costly algae cleanup and equipment damage.
